some sad news

Ok, so over xmas break I recieved a re-application for the job I held last summer as swim coach. Since last summer, I have been debating about whether or not I wanted to return. Forced to make the actual choice, i sat down, carefully contemplated, and decided that YES - it was totally worth it.

I love coaching. I ADORE those kids (even though i hate children). The pool environment was hostile at times, but my boss was great and I got along with my co-workers ok. The pay isn't phenomenal and the hours suck, but in the end, I am so proud of that team that it was all gonna be worth it

Until I got the phone call on Sunday. The one where my boss said "i really wanted you back. I fought for you against the board. I cannot believe I have to say this, but....we have decided NOT to hire you back."

I have never returned to a job before. Every summer, I get a better opportunity and pursue it. But I LOVE this gig. AND what's more - IM REALLY EFFING GOOD AT IT!!!! My team was ranked 16th in the league and hadn't had a winning season in who knows how long. No one could remember winning a meet. We rose from the BOTTOM of our division to the next division up!!! That's almost impossible. Our winning record was thrilling and the technique of my swimmers kept on getting better. The individal race time differences from first meet to last was just AMAZING.

Why do you tell a coach who WINS - hey, we'd rather go another way??? The thing is, they have hired my asst coach from last year as the head coach. He's been on the team since he was 4. He's the best breast-stroker in the state. He is in his freshie year with UNC-W's swim team (did I mention that his times weren't fast enough to get on the team HERE?). So they'd rather hire him. EVEN THOUGH HE SUCKS!!! I fought him all summer cuz he never wanted to make the kids swim! He wanted easy practices. I PUSH. That's why I win. He is a loser who has no clue how to handle the administrative details or design effective practices. Sure, he's faster than me. Sure, he's been on the team forever. But they have done this at their peril

I am going to get a job coaching a rival team. And WE are going to beat them. Badly. Because it just SUCKS that anyone would fire a good coach.

i have really not told anyone about this cuz I am so damn hurt. The rejection just kills me inside. I care so much about those kids and i KNOW i was good at my job. Its so unfair!! I will really miss them all this summer...
